Women's Health - Eco Centric > Green Living Q + A with Renee Loux, May
by Renée Loux
Can I kill lawn weeds without chemicals? -Leslie S., Springfield, IL One thing to keep in mind is that not all weeds are bad. Clover, for instance, tolerates drought well andhelps nourish the soil. Also, remeber that no weed killer, natural or chemical, eliminates the invaders without risk of wiping out your grass too. One trick is to spot treat. Mist weeds with vinegar (any kind will do), or try Weed-A-Tak Organic Herbicide ($12.99 repellex.com), which knocks them out with clove oil and citric acid. What's the difference between "genetically engineered" and "genetically modified" foods? -Brianna O., Atlanta, GA There's no real difference. For both procedures, genes from one living thing are injected into another. For example, researchers have injected tomato plants with fish genes to make the plants more resistant to cold weather. The jury's still out on safety because we don't know the long-term health effects of such tinkering. As much as 75 percent of all processed foods are genetically tweaked, so buy organic whenever possible. Going green is simple and smart.
